The Wizard
There is one thing in the Wasatch backcountry you should try harder to avoid than avalanches. That would be this man (don’t let the floral sofa fabric hat disarm you).

An avalung or air bag won’t protect you from the onslaught of verbal abuse that freely flows forth. After your first encounter you’ll skin away mad, insulted or confused and usually all three.

Bob Athey has been breaking trail in the Wasatch for over thirty five years. He covers more ground and gets more untracked powder than anybody out there. You would think that might lead to a peaceful harmonious existence, but no. Our paths have crossed many times and we enjoy taking our licks.

Bob had a brief appearance in PW06, but we didn’t really capture his crusty character. We’re back at it trying to do him justice.

Love him or hate him, Bob is a legend in his own mind and in the Wasatch. We appreciate the privilege to have him lead us around in the mountains.
There really isn’t anybody with as much experience and knowledge as Bob.
He’s developed a great site to deliver his snow pack observations. Visit wizard of the Wasatch to stay on top of current conditions and enjoy beautiful images.
Thank you Bob for letting us follow you around and for making the backcountry even more fascinating.

Despite what I’d heard prior to meeting Bob, each of my encounters with him have been enjoyable and informative.
