Where are they now?

todd at yurt
I think what made PW05 great was Todd Stuart’s segment. He is a large part of why Powderwhore exists, he was one of the guys that opened our eyes to telemark skiing and touring in the backcountry. Every year we go on tour with the movie, people ask me about him and want to know what he is up to.
Todd is still living it up only the way Todd does. He has shown up at my house a few times this winter and it is always a treat to see him. Todd is planning on moving out of his yurt due to the development of the land around it. Don’t worry about Todd though, he has found a place to call home. He doesn’t have to worry about golf courses being built around him and a place where apparently the terrain is even better for skiing. If you want to know what Todd is up to or to drop him a line here is his website, that’s right even Todd has a website.

Spring into AK

After one of the most memorable winters in the Wasatch Mountains, the PW crew is taking the show north for April in Alaska. There are still more storms in store here on the homefront, but it’s time to move to the big mountains of the Chugach.

Our first stop will be Telepalooza.

The top telemark skiers are converging on Alyeska for this final freeskiing comp of the season. With well over 700 inches of snow, a heli drop for the finals and some of telemarking’s best freeskiers, the inaugural comp should be one to watch. Andy Jacobsen, Will and Kate Cardamone, Chris Erickson and Nick Devore will be the athletes representing PW. Sounds like there might be some parties of sorts as well. (we’ll keep you updated)

Fashion Update

I just got back from fashion week in Paris, and our new line of PW t-shirts got rave reviews. The whole line is currently available in all finer department stores and the Powderwhore store. We were lucky enough to have French model Jean Jean pose in our shirts for photos.

Don’t worry ladies we didn’t forget about you. The PW Tree Tee is sure to make even the burliest mountain gal look feminine, and at $15.00 you can’t pass it up. Check out the Powderwhore store to see the whole collection.

HD

Big news here on the production front of PW, as of March 1st we are shooting entirely in High Definition. That’s right, with the better late than never attitude we creep into the 21st century. Due to the loss of one of our workhorse camera’s (Panasonic DVX100A) and with the thanks to the sponsors who have signed on for PW08, we have a new fleet of 3 HD camera’s. We prefer to have several angle’s of a “run” where possible in order to mix it up. With the model’s chosen we think we have our bases covered.

canon HV20

HV20 camera

First off is the little go anywhere HV20. This will be used with the helmet cam and for capturing upper angles up close. It usually works that on big slopes a few skiers will top out on a peak or slope and the HV20 user will shoot the other skiers from on the ridge and then hook into the helmet cam and enjoy a descent. The HV20 will also be along as the backup on expeditions this spring to the Alaska Range as we attempt some firsts on some interesting lines.

Sony FX-7

Next up in ascending order is the FX-7 from Sony. We believe Mark Twight, “light is right” and this is the most compact HD unit with 3 chips and 20x zoom that we could find. At just over 3lbs we can carry this unit and a tripod deep into the backcountry and not be too tired to push record by the time we get there. Zoom is key when your shooting opposing shots from a long way off. The optical zoom is a huge step up from what the panasonic’s offered, we were getting 16X and that was if we lugged the 2lb tele-converter lens along. This looks to be our everyday go-to shooter for up close to medium length shots.

Canon a1

Canon a1

Last but not least, the big dog from Canon for the far away shots. Snapping on the tele-converter lens we have 32X optical zoom which means we can finally capture really big lines from a distance. With the add on lens, this is a bit of a beast at 6lbs and add another 5.5 for the tri-pod. Luckily we have some mules in the crew so we can split up the gear and make it easier.

As skiers transforming into a video production team we have learned and progressed with each film. The difference in quality is clear from viewing PW05 to PW07. Our hope is to continue advancing on the slopes and in the technological realm in an attempt to bring our mountain experiences to the screen. We have been shooting all winter in Standard Definition, with the season at it’s mid-point we are really excited to finish strong in High Def. In fact, I haven’t seen Jonah this elated since Kelly Clarkson won American Idol.
