Selkirk Mountain Experience

This past winter Backcountry Magazine held a random email drawing and Edward Arriola, a long time Powderwhore and good friend was the winner. The Grand Prize was some skis, outerwear and a trip for one to Selkirk Mountain Experience (SME). Since one is the loneliest number, Ed’s girlfriend Amy signed on for the “Experience”. Apparently three is not a crowd, and I was invited to tag along as well. I brought a video camera to capture the outing for Powderwhore and Ed and Amy shot the following pics.

sme_nh_wake-up.jpg
We flew from SLC to Spokane and drove to Revelstoke. “Are we there yet”? Amy caught me napping.

sme_am_heli.jpg
From Revelstoke it’s a short flight into the Chalet. Amy is ready.

Edward buckled up for the stormy ride.

sme_lodge.jpg
Our lovely accommodations for the week. Perched in the upper reaches of the pine forest it’s a perfect launch pad for day tours.

sme_nhrudy.jpg
This is the legendary Ruedi Beglinger and myself; we look stoned as can be.

sme_skis.jpg
Can you pick out my skis? I’ll give you a hint; I’m not European or a rando racer.

sme_nh_ea_skinning.jpg
A quick introduction to the rules of the lodge and we were off skinning. Our first day was just a half-day tour, but we got the idea that full days were going to be long.

sme_am_nh_chillin.jpg
Chillin out and refueling on the glacier. Amy was all smiles (super strong gal), while Ed and I were hurting from climbing nearly 7K each day of the trip.

sme_ea_nh_bottom-of-ski-tracks.jpg
Our first few days were stormy and we stayed to the lower elevation tree skiing. Once it cleared we hit the upper alpine slopes, but stayed to mellow terrain due to avy conditions. Ed and I catching our breath, that many turns require a lot of effort.

The food deserves it’s own report, but we ate it all before we could get any photo’s. Seriously the food itself was worth the money (even at the current exchange rate). Met some great folks from all over, even some cool Canadians.

sme_edamy_weddingshot.jpg
The lovely couple! I suggested they use this pic for the wedding announcement, so don’t be surprised if you get one in the mail any day now. Right guys?

sme_hut.jpg
The view from the top of Tumbledown Mountain. The terrain was endless and it reminded me of being on the Classic Haute Route in Europe. The arrow is pointing out the location of the lodge. Fun descent.

sme_nh_smiling.jpg
I must admit that I am a really good third wheel. Thanks for letting me tag along guys.

sme_edamydan.jpg
Dan was our guide and he was great. I’ve never been guided before and it was really tough to just shut up and follow the group. It would be a very difficult job to safely steer that many powder hungry folks through huge terrain. Keep up the good work.

sme_sunset.jpg
This is the beautiful view from the back porch where we watched the sunset each night. Everything was really nicely done and you can see Ruedi and his family truly loves what they are doing and appreciate how lucky they are to work and live where they do.

SME was very gracious and let us film at the lodge, but they don’t want to be associated with Powderwhore Productions (we’ve been getting that a lot lately, maybe we should change the name). So we will have to get creative and possibly just blur/edit out anything pertaining to SME in order to have a segment from this trip in the upcoming film, stay tuned.

Charlie Cannon

After 12 hours of driving and a terrible audio book, I pulled off at the Hood River, OR exit. Charlie Cannon had moved back to Oregon this last winter so we had not filmed with him yet, he was slinging drinks at a swanky little bar when I got to town. For those of you who don’t know Charlie, here is his segment from “PW06”. The soundtrack is “Dance Move Burglar” by Euromotion.

We had planned on building backcountry booters, and skiing corn, neither of which ended up happening. It was hot, really hot and the snow was not freezing at night so the corn was not to be had and the snow was so wet that it wasn’t safe to huck, but not all was lost. Charlie is the kind of guy that walks to his own beat, so in true Charlie fashion he did something that has never been done on tele skis. Check out “The Pact” to see what it is.Thank you for your hospitality Charlie.

Happy Birthday Andy Rosenberg!

Sure, it was a month late, but that just made it easier for Andy Rosenberg’s 30th birthday surprise party to maintain it’s surprise. A crowd of 50 or so of Andy’s friends, family and co-workers, hid out in the backyard gazeebo of his girlfriend Rebecca’s house. Even after the “SURPRISE” it still took Andy a long while to figure out what the hell was going on. The rest of the evening was classic Rosenberg in good party form. Some of the following names have been omitted or changed to protect the innocent.

A bunch of party crashers. Thanks to Courtney (man in the middle) for the photo’s.

Some great food thanks to Sherri Moeller (in the background).

They work hard and drink hard together.

We see who got all the good looks in the Rosenberg family.

ar-eye-glimmer.jpg
There seems to be a point with Andy where he drinks enought to transform entirely, it’s usually visible in his eyes. I think this was that moment caught on film.

wrestling.jpg
Wrestling ensued, of course. Only the fleet of foot like Wren and Andy Jacobsen were able to escape without some hand to hand combat.

Andy’s brothers from another mother showing some love (trying to restrain) the B-day boy.

ar-after-bath.jpg
The wrestling got a bit heated and a dunking in the fish pond seemed like a good idea. It took several dedicated individuals and a long struggle to get Andy in the water and it didn’t actually seem to cool things off. (Sorry about the cell phone)

the-pond.jpg
I think the fish survived the bath?

friend-feeling-it.jpg
I didn’t have the pleasure of meeting this guy, but glad to see he’s having a great time.

ar-explaining-2-things.jpg
Here is Andy explaining that with 2 more drinks he will start breakdancing.

ar-break-dancing.jpg
He is a man of his word, those are some sweet moves, but he may actually just be getting up after another wrestling match. As usual, it was an eventful night hanging out with Andy and it really is worth celebrating the fact that he’s survived this long.

Happy Birthday good friend!

02/04/08

It was suppose to be an office day for Noah and I, but when you look out your window and it is puking snow and has been for several hours you have only one option, grab your ski gear and get up the canyon. All photos are frame grabs so the quality is not so great, the video is amazing and will be in PW08.

Noah and I took turns filming each other. The lucky bastard went first.
picture-1.png
The thought of returning emails and shipping DVD orders quickly left my mind with the first turn.
picture-8.png
Noah popping out for a breath before the next snow bath.

We had face shots all day and didn’t see another soul. To all of those who had late shipments and slow responses to your emails in February, I hope you understand now.
