There was only one clear day forecast for the 2 week duration of the trip and it was coming up tomorrow. We knew we had to get as much footage as we could because we might not get another chance.

We headed out of camp up through a nearby pass and crossed another glacier to get to the goods. Quite a bit of treking, but it turned out to be well worth it.

We found 3 different slopes and aspects to work throughout the day. We came away with some great footage. The photo’s must have been good because Jay Beyer didn’t send us any others to post from this day. He keeps the good stuff to sell and is nice enough to give us the B-roll for the blog. I guess you’ll just have to wait to see it in our next film.

With a sizable storm moving in we opted to fly out and not risk missing our scheduled flights back to the lower 48.

Alaska is always a gamble and we were lucky and managed to come away with some excellent stuff for next years film. However, we can do much more and much better in Haines and we’re already planning our return.

Haines Our Way (Part One)

So obviously Haines is THE place for big mountain riding, right? I mean this is where the most amazing footage has been coming from for many years now. Six of us from PW productions were lucky enough to make the journey this spring and get a small taste of what’s out there. Bad weather and all, this short trip left us all wide eyed to the endless untracked mountain possibilities that surround this quiet Southeast Alaskan town.

The ferry ride from Juneau is a nice way to get introduced to all the surrounding mountains.

I’ve never encountered such hospitality given from everyone we met. Our friends at Alaska Mountain Guides completely hooked us up with transport and lodging! Many thanks to Sean, Jason, Jenn, Sammy, Dave, Kevin and really the entire town.

We did travel further inland to Canada several evenings to stretch our legs and watch the sunset.

I know what you’re thinking. Ok, enough silly little close-ups let’s get to the big stuff. That is exactly what we were thinking while sitting around for 5 days as our budget and window of opportunity dwindle away!

After being on call (literally with cell and satellite phones), we finally had a window to fly out. We packed up quick and shot down to the hanger.

Packed and waiting to go at Drake's hanger. He was flying Jeremy Jones in to a remote location. We were next!

What will our small team of elite skiers find once they finally get to the mountains? Can a small plan carry such enormous amounts of gear? Will Rosenberg survive defying the very laws of gravity? All these questions and more will be answered shortly in part 2.

Back Home

The 2 weeks in Valdez is officially over. We skied 10 of the 14 days we were there. We toured 6 of the 10 days, 3 of the days were heli one drops, and 1 day we said screw it and did 5 drops with the heli. I know what your thinking that PW is selling out by not only touring, but conditions were a bit sketchy to be booting up stuff and we all thought it sounded like a lot of fun, It was.

Jake Saxon, Chris Erickson, and Jason West all slayed their lines and were a great crew to hang out with. You learn a lot about people living with them in an RV for 2 weeks. Jake loves bluegrass music, and Jason hates it. Chris loves talking in foreign accents and quoting movies. Jake needs to invest in a few more pair of socks and long underwear. Jason really doesn’t like pan fried burgers. Chris has some amazing dance moves. Thanks guys for making it such a good trip.

Here are some things we learned on our trip. Don’t drink all your good beer first because then your stuck with 120 Miller Lites for the rest of it. Buy the bulk garlic at Costco, it goes good on everything. Bring an Aerobie it provides hours of down day enjoyment, especially when it ends up in rivers and you have to figure out how to get it out. Don’t watch the movie Anchorman “The legend of Ron Burgundy” because the rest of the trip you’ll be quoting it, “It’s Science”. Just because it’s blue outside when you start hiking doesn’t mean it’s not going to be snowing by the time you get to your line. Don’t trust anyone who tells you what the weather will be like the next day, no one knows. The hot water toilets at ARG lodge are both disgusting and oddly comforting. Make sure to get the red eye flight out of Anchorage so you have plenty of time at the Alaskan Bush Co.

I am really excited to see Noah import the footage and see if it turned out as cool as I thought it did. We really need to thank Valdez Heli Ski Guides for flying us, and especially thankful to our guide Dylan Freed for getting us the goods.

Recent PW Sightings

We just received a few photo’s from friends abroad that found PW flicks in foreign locations. Video action sports has been distributing on a larger and more international scale for us this year. It’s fun to see our works popping up around the globe.

Our good friends Ed and Amy found 2 old relics (PW07 and the Linken binding) on display while window shopping in Chamonix last month.

Looks like we are big in Japan. Al least in more demand than Car Danchi 3 (the first two were awesome, but they lost focus on #3).

Dream Team in Haines!

I’ve been heading up to AK and the Valdez/Thompson Pass area for the past several winters to film ‘big mountain’ lines for the PW flicks. This year we all wanted to try something different. We were tired of being cooped up in the RV and waiting for weather breaks. Getting flown in and dropped off on a glacier for 2 weeks in Haines sounded appealing. We assembled a crew of 6 and we are all psyched to head out and see what we capture.

I just discovered the ability to time delay these posts so I’m writing this from my office in SLC, but by the time this is posted we will have been in Haines for almost a week skiing long steep lines, coated with that coastal AK cream (fingers crossed). I’m no gypsy fortuneteller, but I’m going to try and guess/predict what we have been up to and report back from the future.

Monday we flew into Juneau and the next day ferried to Haines. There we encountered bluebird skies and freshly fallen powder from a recent storm cycle that just blew through and left a foot or so of stable new snow in the mountains. We are quickly flown out of town by our skilled pilot Drake onto a one of the numerous glaciers surrounding Haines. We track the bejesus out of every inch of terrain and come home with big smiles.

Stay tuned and see how close I came with my predictions.

Adventures in the chugach

Jonah here checking in from the Valdez library. I have now been in AK since Saturday Apr. 4th. I am here with Jason West, Chris Erickson, and Jake Saxon. Our objective is to get helicopter one drops and then tour in the Chugach.

We were lucky enough to just tour from the road on Sunday and Monday since the clouds were in and out and we didn’t want to pay to fly unless the skies were blue. The guys skied some sweet lines but we were jonesing to get dropped on top of some bigger stuff. Tuesday we heard it was going code blue so we opened up the wallets and got an unguided one drop from the heli. The light was beautful and all three guys killed their lines. We booted up what we’d skied and were ready for more when the clouds came in and we lost light for the rest of the day. We ended up wondering around the mountains skiing monster chutes and trying not to fall in crevasses or get too lost. Then came Wednesday, It was truly bluebird and we had our gamefaces on. We got another heli one drop unguided up in some burly terrain. All three guys skied some massive lines and you couldn’t ask for better light. We continued to boot up chutes and faces and ski the shit out of the drainage we were in. It was one of the best days of filming I can remember.  We owe our friend Dylan Freed a ton of thanks for helping us get to that zone. Today it is snowing so we are taking a well needed day off from the mountains. This is my first time to AK, and so far it has lived up to all the hype.

Thank you Mt. Redoubt

We got a phone call from our good friend Dede O’mara the other day, she was stranded at the airport since flights to Anchorage were cancelled due to the ash from Mt. Redoubt. So instead of getting to go to AK she was stuck skiing wicked deep pow with us.

Treasure Mtn. Hut

Our Friends at Flylow invited me to come ski with them just outside of Silverton, CO. I was filming the whole trip so I didn’t get pictures, but check out Flylows blog for pictures and more details. I had a great time and if your looking for a cool hut trip and have snowmobiles I highly recommend it.
