Flakes on tour in Nevada-California

Reno, a ski town? That was our response the first time folks invited us out to show the flick there.

Well, turns out some of PW’s biggest fans reside in America’s biggest little city.

Maybe they are fans of telemark skiing, maybe fans of Big Sky Brewery?

Hard to tell when you’re giving out 15 cases of cold beer.

Thanks Big Sky!

And thanks to the Patagonia Outlet for hosting the kick start to this leg of the tour.

We drove up to the Tahoe area that night and crashed at a good friends winter retreat.

She wasn’t in town, but there were plenty of great pics around from her childhood.

The great ones do tend to start young. Thanks Megan!

We had most of the day off, so we took some time to get some vert at Alpine Meadows.

Some folks have issues with chair lifts, but I’ve found there’s no better way to get in shape than by riding the chair early season.

I joke around a bit, but no joke here, we showed our flick that night in South Lake Tahoe at Mo’s Place. Mo himself was really nice and the venue was sweet.

Thanks to local, Ty Dayberry for rallying the troops and helping with the raffle.

Most everybody was psyched on the fluffy white footage that flashed before their eyes.

Swung by the Mountain Hardwear store on our way to San Fran. Took the full tour and picked up some sweet outerwear for the upcoming season. Certain sponsors have really stepped up the support despite ‘These Economic Times’. Thanks guys!

This is The Sports Basement’s basement before 120 show up to view the movie. This huge 5 level outdoor shop in San Francisco always puts on a good time by providing free beer (2 kegs that were tapped by mid show) and a fun venue.

Shhhhhh…..Nick Devore is skiing pow in Aspen.

Rather than pay for a motel in town we drove back up to our lovely Mt accommodations.

Next stop was Tahoe City at the Sawtooth Ridge Cafe.

Josh Madsen showed up early to get a good seat! The hardest working man in the telemark ‘industry’ is on the road promoting his new flick and the new Telemark Skier magazine. 70 others joined him shortly to watch the film and raise money for the Sierra Avalanche Center

Jonah and I hit the road that night and drove to Winnemucca. We are now home for a week, preping for the final leg through Colorado. Dates and times below.

Pacific Northwest Tour Week #2

Oh boy, here we go with the next installment of tales from the tour.

Portland, or rather ‘land of the port’ was packed 170 deep to celebrate Columbus Day Eve. The Snowrider Foundation raised money from the raffle to continue their work.

This lucky gal walked away with the new Justice skis from Black Diamond!

A fresh tank of full serve petrol and we were off to Bellingham.

We brought the show back to the Chuckanut Brewery for a second year.

A fun little covered outdoor venue

Wasatch transplant and now adopted local, Paul Kimbrough came out with his posse to enjoy the show with nearly 100 others. The ASAP volunteers raised roughly $500 to keep spreading the word about being safe in the alpine playgrounds.

Sometimes the ‘after party’ happens on a whim. Jonah and I ended up at the local shop Backcountry Essentials. They’ve got a large private selection of the essentials.

We moved the party outside..

and up a notch….

to the roof! Here we conspired to move next years show into the shop. Thanks for the beers guys!

Driving south we pulled in a bit early to the Fremont area of Seattle.

Sight seeing before the show

Excellent turnout at EVO Gear as always. Might be the free beer they provide??

Crashed just outside of town, woke up to a cup of Seattle’s famous beverage.

After so much time in Oregon it took us some time to figure out how to work this silly thing again.

Next stop was a new addition to the tour, Sandpoint Idaho. Lively crowd due partially to the free Moose Drool provided by Big Sky. Thanks Joey!

Lovely drive over to Whitefish.

The Great Northern played host to our largest show there yet. Thanks to Ken Wenzel for putting up posters and spreading the word.

Mesmerized!

We moved down the street to see the raucous punk that is Burning Cattle. Probably won’t be using them in the next flick, but go check them out if you get a chance.

Missoula is home to Big Sky Brewing and our next stop on the road.

Each fall they put together the ‘Burning Dog’ which is a fundraiser event for the local avalanche center. Yes that is a gigantic dog made of pine bows. Seems like you can only do this sort of thing in Montana.

Sam Cox, a true Montucky local, took time out of smoke jumping to help us out.

Congrats Joe and team Big Sky for winning the Galonde Quaffing and moving on to the World Championships.

We showed the flick on the outside of the Brewery on a huge screen. Somebody tripped over the audio cables and cut the movie short a few minutes. The chant of ‘Burn the dog’ quickly drew the crowd of several hundred to the main event.

We set the night on fire.

Until this was all that was left.

The next morning was like Christmas!

Santa doesn’t always ride a sleigh.

Strange year at the Pour House! We’ve been here for several years with crowds of around 150. This year was modest with around 60 and half of those folks were friends of Jay Beyer. Thanks for coming out everybody. That’s just the way the tour goes. We spend tons of time trying to figure out why some shows do really well, why some tank and why some change from year to year.

The bar scene is never disappointing in this town.

This guy didn’t even come for the movie, but bought all the merchandise. I think he woke up the next morning asking ‘what the hell is Powderwhore’.

Sam displaying that his smooth style crosses over from skiing to the dance floor.

Heading back towards SLC we stopped in Victor for the next show.

The Wildlife Brewery hosted the event. Jonah waits patiently for the crowd to arrive. Crowd might be a strong word to use, but 25 folks came out to hang and view Flakes. Thanks to Chris at 22Designs for arranging this show and pulling it off.

We crossed over the pass into Jackson Hole and spent the day hanging out with our good friend Dede. She has recently moved into a really nice place with a huge basement with plenty of room to house some stinky ski bums. We’ll be visiting this winter!

Our final night on the road was at the legendary Mangy Moose. Some ski towns have a real off season where town is dead and apparently we hit the peak of this season in JH. 15 friends and fans came out for what was our most ‘intimate’ showing. We’ll try and move the date next year to try and make the show more of a success.

Miles and miles on the road have given Jonah and I time to come up with next years film concept, discuss filming locations and plans for the winter. We learned a lot, drank too much, met up with good friends and made new ones. The first 2 weeks have been excellent!

Being home for 24 hours was a nice break to do some laundry, rest, hit the gym and repack swag and merch for the next leg. Jonah is packing up right now as I am finishing this. Off today for the California/Nevada leg of the tour. Dates and times are below.

Reno 10/21 Wed 8pm Patagonia Outlet $10

S. Lake Tahoe-10/22 Thur 8pm Mo’s Place $10

San Francisco 10/23 Fri 7pm Sports Basement (1590 Bryant St.) $10 (from 6-7 happy hour, free beer and wine, snacks and 20% discount on everything in store)

N. Lake Tahoe 10/24 Sat 7pm Sawtooth Ridge Cafe (877 N Lake Blvd) $10

Flakes Tour- Boise to Hood River

Time to pack up and hit the road with the flick. On this first leg of the tour we have 14 shows in 14 nights throughout Idaho, Oregon, Washington and Montana.

We started things off in Boise at the newly remodeled Idaho Mountain Touring. Great shop with a friendly crew that helped us rearrange the shop for a showing.

Before

100+ showed up to torture themselves with wintery images on a lovely fall evening.

Our good friend Mark Menlove and crew from the Winter Wildlands showed up to sell beer and raffle tix to benefit their work in promoting non-motorized winter recreation. They raised over $700 thanks to the folks in Boise.

We hit the road towards Bend. Jonah wanted to stay here.

I had to remind him why that wasn’t such a good idea.

Besides, why pay for a cheap motel when we are towing our own luxury accommodations?

The beautiful town of Bend is home to the funky St Francis Theatre.

Before..

130 folks lining up to get seats and beer.

In working with the Oregon Natural Desert Association we raffled off Scarpa boots and other prizes to raise money to protect and create wilderness areas in WhOregon.

I like pumping my own gas, but it’s not an option here.

Ashland was a new addition to the tour. Jonah and I always get nervous and a little chippy with each other when we don’t think anybody is going to show up.

Always nice to be humble and proven wrong. 50 of the kindest and friendliest folks came out to Creekside Pizza for an intimate viewing. Thanks everybody!

We kept finding ourselves driving along saying ”Oregon is really nice”.

And you don’t have to pump your own gas!

Backcountry Gear was host to our next stop in Eugene. Great little shop that hosts slide shows and puts out the red carpet for attendee’s.

120 came out for the free beer and food and seemed pleasantly surprised there was a movie as well. Jonah and I succumbed to the free flowing libations and stayed up well past our bed time dancing and partying with the owners in the warehouse.

We passed out and slept in the parking lot to the sweet screech of trains. This friendly local suggested breakfast at Ye Old Pancake House. Can’t go wrong there.

A short drive north put us in Hood River with time to take care of some business

We had a nice convergence of PW’s at the Dog River Coffe house. Darrell was in town for some turns on Mt Hood. Kyle Erkkila was passing through town. And Charlie Cannon is the local legend.

A packed house of 80 supporters showed up to support PW and the Teacup Nordic Center.

We stayed out enjoying some nice local beers and avoiding fights with some not-so-nice locals. Ended up spending a lovely night in the Wal-Mart parking lot.

It’s not just a traveling party, we put the hurt on at the track this morning.

This little fella helped us park the trailer at The Kennedy School where we currently sit waiting for tonights show in the Land of Port. This is one of the coolest venues and rowdiest crowds in the PNW. We’ll let you know how it goes! Oh yeah, we’ve got the new Justice skis from BD along with other prizes from our great sponsors.

So, that’s a little recap of the first week on the road. Check out the tour page at www.powderwhore.com for all the tour stops.

SLC Premiere Week

Back at Brewvies for the Powderwhore SLC premiere this year. We added another show as we have every year for the past 5 seasons. Five of the six shows sold out with over 1,000 folks coming out to see FLAKES.

This was a huge jump from last year! Thanks for coming out everybody. This is Brewvies biggest event of the year and we thank them for hosting the madness. We keep looking at larger venue’s, but we like it here and it still seems to work (most of the time). Maybe Energy Solutions next year?

As of last year Jonah took on the role of ‘Tour Manager’, he’s done a great job! He makes one call and…..

turns this…….

into this! The lovely gal in red is our younger sister Deborah. Thanks for coming!

A variety of items were raffled off with benefits going to the Utah Avalanche Center. Final numbers aren’t in, but they were guessing they raised around $4,500!!! Thanks to everybody for supporting this amazing service they provide access to.

Andy Rosenberg caught fondling, the gear mannequin. ‘Manny’  travels to each tour stop begging to be won by one lucky person on Dec 10th. Thanks to Black Diamond, Mountain Hardwear, Ortovox for outfitting all the gear for this prize.

They came, they saw, they were stoked. Our work here is done. Time to hit the road for over 30 more shows throughout the western states. Stay tuned for updates. Visit the Tour page for the schedule of showings if you want to come see it in HD on the big screen.
